Managing the stress of a chronic disease like diabetes can be tiring and cumbersome. Not only are you expected to check your blood at least once a day and take an array of medications, you’ve probably also been told to “lose weight, stop eating carbs, and control your appetite” as ways to manage your blood sugars. You may have heard that losing weight can “reverse” diabetes, so you’ve tried diets and food restriction to control your eating, but you’ve always managed to put the weight back on (plus some). You may feel like you’ve tried everything you can think of but you’re still struggling to stick to all the rules, and it feels like your diabetes is just getting worse.
Always remember, YOU are in charge of your own body, and YOU know it best. We are here to help you get back into the driver’s seat and discover the joy of having a healthy relationship with food and your body, while helping you make self-informed decisions around managing your blood sugar. We are here to be your cheerleader and to support you on this journey to rediscover joy in food and movement. We hope to increase your confidence in your own ability to successfully manage your blood sugar without a focus on weight loss, restriction, or excessive exercise. Instead, we will help you discover strategies to eat the foods you enjoy while incorporating new foods and techniques that support blood sugar management. We recognize the challenges that accompany living with and managing diabetes. We provide compassionate, individualized care that is tailored to your needs and goals.
Utilizing the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES) and Intuitive Eating, we will take the focus off your weight and help you discover strategies to eat the foods you enjoy, while also incorporating new foods and techniques that support blood sugar management and overall health. Through HAES and Intuitive Eating we will help you regain trust in your body’s cues and signals. These skills, in combination with tools like blood sugar monitoring, can help you gain a better understanding of your body’s unique patterns and needs so the changes you make will be more realistic, sustainable, and impactful on blood sugar management. It’s natural to want to focus on weight loss, as you may have been told to do so by many healthcare professionals in the past, and we are always available to discuss your fears and concerns around weight gain. However, at the end of the day, we choose to focus our interventions on creating healthy habits independent of your weight and body size.
When working with us, our hope is that you feel...
We help with:
WHO: Schedule with Jamie or Geanna
WHERE: For the time being, we are only seeing clients via video calls (aka telehealth). See our FAQ page for more info.
HOW OFTEN: Most clients are seen every 2-4 weeks to start, and less frequently as time goes on. Nutrition counseling is most effective when you have regular appointments to check in on progress, receive nutrition guidance and develop new goals.
