In culinary school I learned the science behind cooking. In nutrition school I learned the science of nutrient utilization and how food is medicine. Working at hospitals I became an expert at breaking food down to numbers. As a nutrition therapist, I’ve learned that feeding is much more than numbers and chemistry. It is one of the many ways we show love.
For people fed through a feeding tube, it’s not uncommon to feel like you have to compromise your values on nutrition because the formula ingredient list has things on it you wouldn’t dream of adding to a home cooked meal... things like corn maltodextrin, soy protein isolate, cellulose gel and artificial flavors.
And as much as I love managing the nutrition of tubies, I also feel troubled by the use of these formulas in people with perfectly normal intestinal tracts capable of handling real food. It feels unfair to the person and incongruent with my duty as a nutritionist to help my patients be as well-nourished as possible. Did you know that standard formulas have more sugar than soda? They contain 20-50% of their calories from sugar, which is well above the Dietary Guidelines for American's recommended maximum limit of 10%. Since when do these guidelines only apply to Americans who eat by mouth?
As a Registered Dietitian, I want to help more tube-feeders transition to real-food feeding by use of home blenderized formulas or commercially available ones. As of now, too many tubies and their healthcare providers don’t realize that is even an option, let alone knowledge of how to go about it. I've been managing tube feeding, including blenderized diets, since 2012 and can walk you through it too. Changing to blended food feedings empowers you to reclaim your role in feeding according to your beliefs, values and preferences.
